Broken or otherwise weakened teeth can be covered by dental crowns to improve strength and appearance. Though they can also be viewed as a cosmetic solution for severely discolored teeth, crowns are predominantly recommended by our Greater Fort Lauderdale, FL, dentists in situations where areas of your smile have experienced some degree of damage.
Here’s what you should know regarding
and how one is placed.Purposes of a Dental Crown
Getting a dental crown isn’t exactly a routine procedure, but it’s beneficial all the same. Before determining if you are in need of one, our dentists will closely examine your tooth and assess the level of injury or wear and tear. A crown may be the best way to build your tooth back up and further protect it moving forward.
Generally speaking, dental crowns are ideal for:
- Weak, cracked, or broken teeth
- Completing other restorations like dental bridges or dental implants
- Teeth that recently underwent root canal treatment
- Extremely stained teeth that are resistant to tooth bleaching
What to Expect for Your Dental Crown Placement
There are no surprises when it comes to placing a dental crown. It’s fairly straightforward and will consist of two visits to our office. The first visit will involve tooth preparation, dental impressions, and a temporary crown for you to wear.
Our dentists will need to reshape the tooth that will receive the crown which means we’ll need to remove some of the enamel. If we didn’t do this, the new crown wouldn’t be able to firmly stay put and might not fit. After enamel has been removed, we’ll take impressions of the tooth and send those to our participating dental lab for fabrication.
Much like other restorations, a
may take a few weeks to be created and make its way back to our dentists. While we wait, you’ll be given a temporary crown so your tooth stays protected. Your second visit will be when the color, shape, and fit of the new crown are double-checked.Restrengthen Your Teeth
